Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Depending on the type of service, the process will vary. But in general, I set up an in person appointment via text or a phone call. All appointments require a $25 deposit, which goes toward the final cost. Custom garment consultations cost $25.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have spent countless hours practicing this craft, and have been mainly self taught over 20 years. In 2021 I took a two week Pattern Making intensive course at The Cut Fashion Academy in Vancouver, BC.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Most alterations are standard pricing but some alterations require custom pricing, because some fitting problems require specific solutions. Simple alterations such as hems start at $20, with more complex alterations such as those done on bridal gowns costing hundreds.
Custom clothing totals range greatly, from $80 to $900+ for labor and materials. My custom hourly rate is $30 per hour.
Private sewing lessons are $50 per hour, with an additional fee of 50 cents per mile charged for traveling costs.
How did you get started in this business?
I started offering sewing lessons to neighbors, and people I met at vending events for my business. I have been practicing this skill in my free time since childhood so it is not only my profession but also a God given gift and passion.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have taught youth and adults sewing, and designed custom clothing for all ages. I am currently doing work for several local fashion brands. I am currently designing new styles for one of the largest fast fashion brands in the world.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I love going to bridal expos. Seeing the beautiful displays, networking, looking at the trending wedding gowns, and eating free samples.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Look closely at the work they have completed to get an idea of the quality and style of their work.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
What are my learning goals? Do I want to learn in person or virtually? Am I willing to buy some of my own materials for teaching projects? What kind of sewing equipment do they have available for lessons? For alterations and custom: Do I want to source any materials, let the designer source them, or go on a shopping trip with the designer? Am I willing to meet once or twice for measurements and fittings? What is my budget? What is my timeline and am I willing to pay extra if it is a rush order?
