    We talk on the phone or text first.

    i suggest that they listen to my SoundCloud to hear what kind of a DJ I am.  

    If they like my mixes, they give me a call to tell me about their event. If i am confident in my ability to do the job well, I give them my quote.  In some cases, I ask for a deposit, and they sign a contract.  I can provide proof of insurrance.  About a week before the event, they send me their playlist or perhaps tell me the names of their three favorite bands so I can prepare a folder of songs for their event.  We talk on the phone a day or two before the event to confirm the details.  And I show up at least half an hour prior to the start time so I have my equipment set up!

    I have an MFA

    i started taking piano when I was two and a half, and I can play any popular tune by ear.  I have a lot of classical music committed to memory.  Please, ask me to recite the lyrics of any top-40 song from the 1960s.  I have a weirdly good memory for music.

    I charge $125 an hour.

    i usually work with an assistant.

    I fell in love with it, and I did it as a hobby, until the pandemic cancelled my art teaching job.  And I started pursuing it full time.  And i am quite good at it now.

    As a professional DJ, I have worked for Nightclubs and bars, party promoters, private individuals, party planners, businesses and schools.

    I really love being a DJ.  There have been lots of great events.  

    i will tell you about the gigs I had over the past seven days: 
    Last Tuesday, I played a 5 hour set  at a big laundromat, which was unusual.  Miss Teen Oceanside was there, and she danced to my set.  

    I had a really good time playing a very eclectic mix on Saturday at a 34th birthday party.  I rocked that party.  anytime I get to be creative about my set, I am very happy.

    i also played an eighth grade dance on Friday.  It wasn't great.  An authority figure accused me of causing the kids to make out by setting the wrong mood, even though I didn't select the playlist.  The kids wanted to play with my controller, and I let them, but their teacher intervened.  It was still better than having a normal job. 

    that's what it's like.  I'm busy.  It is a great job for me!  I don't like to do the same thing over and over.  I love music.  New people are fun to look at.

    look for a DJ who likes to play the kind of music you enjoy hearing.  Give your DJ some information about your taste so the DJ can prepare.  DJs focus on music; MCs direct the action at the event.

    Whether they should hire a DJ or an MC

    Whether they need the DJ to take requests... if so, they should provide an internet password.

    Whether they are offended by the words that are usually censored on radio and TV but not in the movies.
