Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I like to discuss all the details of their event and especially the music selections that they and their guests would most like to hear. This can include a "song/artist wishlist" and specific songs they'd like to have performed. I try to work within the structured budget the customer has yet be up front about my fees especially if a great deal of travel is involved. I try to create a fun atmosphere so they feel comfortable contacting me at any time to update info or fine tune things.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I had 5 years of piano lessons from age 6 to 11 but have actually played by ear ever since..can play and sing ANYTHING I commit to memory without music so virtually no song can not be performed. I am a vocal coach for performers as well, studied Theatre & Speech at DeSales University Center Valley, PA so my musical theatre background aids me greatly in my performances.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Generally I try to work within the allotted budget for each customer, fees depend on travel time to and from/set up/break down time as well. Usually a minimum of $150-200 for an hour minimum and then adjusted accordingly for more hours..price range realistically is $250-$1,000 again depending on amount of hours.
How did you get started in this business?
I was in my first band as a keyboardist/singer at age 17..the other guys were in their 20s. So while playing church organ at Catholic Mass the lead guitarist of a local band approached me about auditioning for his band..the rest is history.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have played for many famous people or for them for gala events in NYC. For wedding ceremonies and receptions, house parties for birthdays anniversaries or Christmas holidays, funerals as well. Always happy to deliver what each unique customer is seeking.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
In August 2019 played a 70th birthday party at The Wheeltapper Pub at Fitzpatrick Central Hotel in NYC for a famous TV entertainment reporter who has hired me several times in the past for family events at his home or at NYC venues. Continue to be grateful to him for repeat bookings which always include their input with sing alongss and special requests.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Some advice would be to understand the work involved with each event and a minimum price that must be asked for. I've noticed in the past that potential clients who used the word "just" often("I JUST need two songs played for the ceremony" or "it's JUST a 45 minute reception" are looking for a low fee and may not be amenable to a realistic fair fee that a pro must charge for their time and expertise. They may then have to settle for a musician accustomed to playing "for peanuts" and then perhaps not being happy with the result.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
I've found that SPACE or the room the musician would be given to set up is often MUCH SMALLER than is realistic for a comfortable performance. So providing ample performance space should be a consideration..also the budget and that there is an electrical outlet in proximity to the set up area is important.
