About

Stratify, a nine-piece contemporary jazz ensemble, was established in 2012 by bassist and bandleader Doc Robinson. Initially, the band operated as a six-piece unit, exclusively dedicated to funky instrumental contemporary jazz. As per Doc Robinson’s description, “My objective was to assemble a band akin to Spyro Gyra, one of my most cherished contemporary jazz ensembles. It was only upon recognizing my desire for a more expansive sound that we transitioned to a nine-piece configuration.”

The musicians of Stratify are among the most accomplished in the Bay Area. Drummer Michael “MJ” Jackson, Guitarist Jeff Miller, Keyboardist Robert Bance, Percussionist Tam Sugayan, and bassist Doc Robinson collectively comprise a highly rhythmic section. The addition of vocalist Karen “KB” Bance and the horn section, featuring Trumpet Player Bill Smolik, Trombonist Christian Manzana, and Sax Player Terry Aguiar, results in an exceptional performance and sound.

    Frequently asked questions

We speak to the customer about location, length of performance, stage space and any special music request.  This helps us determine how much we charge and also whether we are a good fit for their event.

Forty plus years in the music business and an MBS in Business Entertainment from Full Sail University.

If sound is provided our rate is $1400 for 3 hours of music.

If sound is not provided our rate is $1900 for 3 hours of music.

We do not perform over 3 hours.

I've been a musician for 40+ years.  The contemporary jazz music we play is something all 9 of us are passionate about.

Supper clubs, nightclubs, private events and festivals.

Every event we have performed is awesome and memorable to us because we love what we do.  If we make one person smile or forget about a tough day or week, we have accomplished our goal.

Great music can be found in the oddest of places and people.  Just because you've never heard of a particular band or musician doesn't mean they are'nt great.

What is my budget?  A 9 or 11 piece band will most likely not perform for $300.

Do I have enough space for the band I want?

Is there sufficient power and easy access to it or do I need to provide a generator?

Do I need to provide meals or is a buyout more appropriate?

Is my event formal, semi-formal or casual?

Is venue site over 100 miles from the band's location?  If so, do I need to provide lodging for a late night event?
