We are goofy people. We love to laugh and make light when things are heavy. We make crappy circumstances into something more lighthearted because that’s how folks get through things.
Sometimes, other folks don’t share your vision. Sometimes, it gets lost in the sauce, yeah? But I feel like we should be honest with each other about our experiences and do better by one another.
We hired a DJ for our wedding. He spoke well, acknowledged and agreed to all the things. We signed a contract (twice, because he got my name wrong). Contract, deposit, consult, all was good.
A month before the wedding, we sent this DJ a preliminary spreadsheet with all the songs and artists we asked to be part of our ceremony and reception.
A week prior to the wedding, we sent the final spreadsheet. With all the songs and notes and whether they were for ceremony, pre-ceremony, reception, etc.
The night before the wedding, the DJ is messaging me to ask if there were any introductions (had already confirmed, and confirmed again, just us newlyweds), to ask my husband’s first name and our last name (again), and to ask whether there were any special dances (again, confirmed just our first dance).
Come the day of, our DJ showed up and ran into a tree because he couldn’t follow signs and directions. Of course, it was the venue’s fault, as he made sure my husband knew we booked something “out in the woods.” Well, that’s “what we’re into.”
Not only was he rude to my husband, he was rude to the venue owners and our bridal party and family. He was asked more than once if he needed help to unload and set up, and each time he declined.
Ceremony starts, he plays the wrong song for our walk down the aisle (noted on the spreadsheet he was given). I had to stop as I came up the walkway to say that wasn’t our song. By that point, the ceremony was in motion and we couldn’t take it back. He changed it finally and played what we had specified for him (again, full spreadsheet) for the 20 seconds it took me to get down the aisle. He took a moment from my husband and me we can never get back.
He had to be told to stop eating appetizers and help get guests into the reception area so we could enter and had to be told to introduce us (confirmed the night before).
We asked for no speeches. Once he was redirected to at least introduce us, he then announced that folks would make speeches. I took the microphone to thank everyone, and he walked away after promoting himself again.
He had to be redirected multiple times to play the music he was asked to play and to read the room for the flow.
Was he given a 1-2-3 of the order of songs? No. Maybe I’m mistaken of what DJ services should be. Maybe I’m mistaken that a DJ should listen to the music requested ahead of the event to get the flow, make sure they have everything downloaded and available (instead of griping about not having WiFi), and be able to read a room and speak without just getting on the mic to promote themselves?
And then this same DJ commented on our announcement post to again promote himself. My family and bridal party made their feelings known. Instead of taking any accountability, he argued, told them to “have a nice life,” addressed them disrespectfully, and blocked them. He even went so far as to lie about what I said to him in a comment on my own post.
I emailed the DJ to clarify the issues I had in a not so public forum. He’s not even had the decency to respond.
The disrespect for our event, and for us, is astounding.

So far, his quick responses and accommodating attitude. The event won’t happen until January 13, 2024.
