Katherine Anne is the sole artist at Elegant Ink. She graduated from St Mary of the Woods College, Indiana, with a Bachelor's in fine art and classical music. Originally from St. Louis, she moved to Denver in 1998. She spent several years working as a freelance illustrator for many prominent advertising firms and doing other commission work, such as portraits and architectural renderings. She began tattooing in 2003, and opened her own shop in 2008. There may be a wait to see her, since she is the only artist. But definitely worth the wait. What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Very comfortable environment. One customer only at a time, with the door locked for added privacy. We work on your design via email before you come to the shop. Extra time spent on size and placement. Low pressure, high compassion.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Kat has a bachelor's degree in Fine Art, and tattooing experience since 2003.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
We charge $150 an hour, (using a stop watch to exclude all breaks) with a $60 minimum. Prices increase once a year, however, you are grandfathered in at the rate you begin. That is our "Client Loyalty Program." We accept Mastercard, Visa, American express, Discover, and of course cash. No personal checks. Financing is available on larger pieces.
How did you get started in this business?
When Kat's best friend lost her sister, she designed a memorial tattoo. Katherine went with her friend to hold her hand during the proceedure. Never walking into a tattoo shop before, neither knew what to expect, and were a little uncomfortable, but watching the artists "paint on skin", Katherine knew this was her calling. Once her career started to take off, she opened her own studio in 2008. Elegant Ink was created with a vision of a nonthreatening environment, comfortable to both women and men.
Her background as an illustrator shows in her tattoo work. Advanced in portraits and animals, nothing is off limits. The studio is also a fine art gallery. She has won numerous awards for her artistry. The establishment is voted one of the best in Denver, as she specializes in custom work and cover ups. We are open 6 days a week by appointment, and the majority of our clientele are by referral.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Get to know the artist. Look at their portfolio, and reviews. There is a high turn over in artists at most shops, so you need to be careful. Make sure shop is clean, and find out if they use disposable, or autoclave. If you feel high pressure to "Do it now" you may have an artist who is looking to fill their pockets rather than make you comfortable and satisfied. Find an artist who you have good chemistry with. It is a life long decision.

Am I comfortable at this shop with this artist?
