Upon finishing studies at the Savannah College of Art and Design, John "Boaty" Boatright worked for companies such as Turner broadcasting and also spent time freelancing for himself during many diversified projects including book covers,vector graphics, t-shirt lines, chapter art, character design, Logo Design, business cards, graphic, design for advertising, branding, story boards, and commissioned paintings, murals, and custom video game cabinets all while building an equally diverse portfolio of tattoo work spanning well into 16 years of experience in the industry.
Boaty's diverse art interests have led to a wide array of skills in the tattoo industry leaning his interests towards cover ups and challenging design aspects. He enjoys tying together opposing subject matter and diving into a puzzle even combining multiple styles. Boaty remains adept at both black and grey as well as color. Consults are free. What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
"I enjoy the consultation process. When the artist and client hit it off and start traveling down that creative path together....well there's nothing like it. Its a high. A creative adrennaline rush."
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
"....really I think almost every aspect of my life has influenced my work, and vice versa. Its all constantly changing. A beautiful mess sorting itself out into a picture.... life's an art in itself and art only mimics it."
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
I do have a standard hourly rate of $150, but it wouldn't be uncommon for me to flat rate large session work that benefits the client.
How did you get started in this business?
That's a story for the chair probably. As is why I stayed in the field.
