About
Hello! My name is Mia Kim Johnson, but everyone calls me Kim. I am the sole proprietor and main stylist of Hands That Work. I have been involved in the hair industry for about 18 years.
Based on my past experiences, I came to an important understanding: there is more to hairstyling than just a quick "shampoo & blow-dry". Hairdressing is a matter of expression & self-image. When a client walks through my doors, not only do I assess the wellness of their follicles, but I also acknowledge the client's wants & desires. I dedicate my services to producing creative, eloquent styles that align with the client's aesthetic aspirations.
My long-standing experience as a hairdresser has also allowed me to gain proficiency in a variety of techniques. Clients can rely on me if they are looking for coloring, chemical processes, precision cutes, braids & twists, and more.
Finally, my broad clientele has gifted me with the ability of consultation. This is a skill that I’ve developed while interacting with my clients over the years. I am able to advise clients on how to treat their hair when they're outside of the salon. This way, together, we can create a hair regime that promotes the heath & wellness of their hair.
Although I am eager to introduce and perform new & trending hairdressing methods, I will not compromise the health of the client's hair. I will always stand as their advocate. The provision of professional, prudent, and creative services is a must. Regardless of age or gender, Hands That Work always seeks to bring out the best in everyone.
There is nothing that I enjoy more than building rapport with clients for the first time. I gain an understanding of their goals, in addition to the status of their hair. When I evaluate my clients, I am granted an opportunity to adjust my techniques in order to accommodate their needs.
For instance, if I am introduced to a new client who enjoys frequently coloring their hair, I would explore different options on how to apply beautiful colors while keeping processing damage to a minimum. I would also teach the client on the implications of frequent hair coloring without discouraging them. New methods are explored in order to empower both the clients and myself.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Typically, I would schedule to meet with a new client during my salon hours. They would fill out a Hairdresser Profile Card. Information that includes the Full Name, cell-phone/house number, and email address will be placed into the Salon's scheduling system.
I would ask them about their "hair goals" while assessing the condition of their hair & scalp. I will explain the results of me assessment, and instruct the client on what methods can help them.

I am current;y licensed by the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling. I have been styling hair for a litle over 20 years. Howveer, I have been in business under Hands That Work for about 18 years.

The standard pricing system follows a base price. The salon is known to distribute discounts and promotional offers via social media and on the salon's website.
What types of customers have you worked with?
My client base consists of women and children (but I also provide services for men). I usually encounter clients with curly or Afro-textured hair. For that reason, I have extensive knowledge on hairstyles that involve braiding, chemical straightening, and press & curls.
