How did you get started in this business?
I began with the typical photography portfolio- seniors, families, weddings- which gave me a great base working with people and getting good at getting genuine, meaningful lifestyle images of every age range.
I got bored, however, shooting the same things over and over, which led to my venture into commercial work. I love the challenge of shooting a wide variety of subjects- from food to corporate headshots to lifestyle marketing work to architecture to events. I never get bored now, and each thing I shoot sharpens me in all the other genres too.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I've worked with a variety of local and national brands, including: Samsung, Hampton Inn, the National Park Service, CIY, Ozark Christian College, the Joplin Convention & Visitors Bureau, Bergan pet products, FEAST magazine, Woodcraft magazine, and many more.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
-always check portfolio first- specifically, how has this photographer done with large scale projects? Are the "best" images on his/her site anomalies, or is the work consistent? Check for case studies and blog entries to see how the work does in long form.
-How does the photographer communicate? Do they show the right balance- carrying their own vision, but also easy to collaborate with?
-Do their rates fit with your budget? If not, is there a way to reach a compromise or save back until you can hire them?
-Does the photographers' style fit your brand vision? You don't want to hire a very traditional photographer for a modern, quirky lifestyle campaign- or vice versa.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
For Brands:
-what is our identity and core purpose- and how does that carry out into visuals? What "vibe" are you going for in your branding?
-what all will the images be used for? Digital? print? specific ads? website banners? The more I know about the final product, the better I can adapt the shoot to make sure I get every shot needed.
-how outside the box are you wanting to think? Do you want images that represent quirkiness and fun? Or something more traditional? I specialize in the first but can achieve either!
