30 years in business

About this pro

I've been in business for nearly 30 years and most of my customers are repeat customers.  I shoot to communicate their message and needs.  My photography career has taken me all over the world creating images of everything from food to people to buildings and products.  I started as a combat photographer in the United States Air Force then started my business upon the end of my stint.  And I still love to make photographs after all of that time.

Professional photography is fun.  It allows me to be creative and grant me access to places and people most professions don't provide.  I've photographed all walks of life.  I've shot Presidents, Business Executives, Working Folks, Models, Infants and the Aging. I've shot all sorts of buildings and industries.  I've traveled to communities near and around the world.  I've shot images from figher aircraft.  I shot car races, bicyclists and horse races.  My photos have been published in many, many of books and magazines and all over the internet.  So, it's hard not to enjoy your work when it provides a satisfying lifestyle.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

Usuallly, I talk with the customer via email first, then set up a time to meet or make a phone call.  I learn as much as I can from them before I add my perspective.  Often times, people will see a photo or a style of photo to use as a reference to illustrate what they want.  We discuss the project and set up a time to shoot.  Most of the times, customers ask me to use my judgement because that's why they contacted me in the first place.  They call on my experience and professionalism to create the imagery that will suit their need best.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I was a combat photographer in the United States Air Force.  I attended  The Newhouse School of Journalism, Syracuse University.  I have photographed countless subjects in every imaginable environment all over the world and learned from those experiences.  I continue to learn constantly because photographic technology continues to evolve constantly.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.

I charge by the project, not by a day rate like many photographers.  For instance, sometimes I may have to wait for hours at a location to get the right light.  Sometimes, the light is perfect when I show up.  But the bottom line is the customer wants a great photograph and they don't care how long it takes to get it.

How did you get started in this business?

After I did a 6 year tour with the US Air Force as a combat photographer, I came back to my home town of Harrisburg Pennsylvania and started a commercial/editorial photography business.  So I've been shooting portraits, products, buildings, food models and industries for advertising and editorial stories most of my life.

What types of customers have you worked with?

Every type you can imagine.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?

Look at their portfolio first to see if their style fits your needs.  Then see if they have a personality you can work with.

What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?

They should know their budget and how they plan to use the photos.
