M.Photo
About
My name is Emily Butz and I am the photographer behind M.photo I graduated Virignia Commonwealth University with my BFA in photography.
Photography is the perfect tool for capturing the moments of our lives and ensuring that they are remembered fully and authentically. I keep my photo sessions simple to allow clients to focus on what matters -- the laughter, the joy, the smiles of the moment and the company they keep. Clients can also expect to recieve all photos from the session. Its your life I'm capturing and it is my duty to be as generous with those moments as I can be.

I enjoy meeting every client and working with them to get the best photos possible. I love a good challenge and each session brings with it its own variables and hurdles. I'm there to work hard at every session and to serve my clients as best as I can. Usually this means playing with the kids, getting that 2 year old to giggle and finally say yes to something, and to make everything simple and easy for the flustered bride on her wedding day.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Clients reach out to enquire about my availability. From there we decide on date, time, and the location of their session. Most sessions require a $50.00 deposit to hold the date on my calendar. The remaining balance is then paid on the date of the scheduled session. (via check, cash, or venmo)
After the session I go through the photos and delete any out of focus images or photos where the eyes are closed. Next, I select images to recieve full editing and retouching. Finally, I upload all edited and non-edited photos to an online album. My turnaround time is anywhere from 2-4 days.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a formal education in fine art photography from a four year program at a university. This means I not only know about the history of photography but I also have an understanding of photography as an artistic medium and what it means to articulate my own artistic voice within the medium as well.
In addition to my formal education, I have quite a few years of proffessional practice. This means I know my camera technically in and out. I've learned a lot over the years from trial and error but I've also worked for other photography studios and have learned what it means to be professional in all areas of business from customer communication to on the job presentation.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
Detailed pricing can be found on my website. There, I list the different wedding and Newborn packages I offer. Below, you'll find a basic pricing guide:
Full Session: $200.00 -1 hour
Mini Session: $125.00 -half hour
Newborn Session: $225.00 up to two hours
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
I would tell customers to look for someone who not only has a style that they like but to also look for a professional who has at least four years of experience and who has experience shooting many different types of events. You want someone that knows their craft cold, who won't be fuddling with their camera, who knows the best lighting, and who isn't relying on props or gimmicks to make their work sell.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Clients should be very clear about the style they're looking for, be honest about the time they expect the photographer to work for, and to be realistic about their budget. Finally, clients shouldn't feel awkward or be afraid to ask questions especially about budget. Most professionals I know who are passionate about their work are willing to be flexible to meet the needs of the client.
