Frequently asked questions

Depending on your personal preference, we can meet in person to discuss your photography or wedding officiant needs, or we can handle most of the discussions by email or telephone. For weddings, it's usually best to meet in person at least once before the wedding. For family portraits or senior portraits, it's up to you if you want to meet us first or just schedule your appointment by phone and meet on the day of the photo session. We're very flexible. For our 20 years in Destin, FL, we dealt mostly with tourists and couples from other states who were planning destination weddings. We did not have the opportunity to meet them until the day of the portrait session or the wedding, so we're very accustomed to handling details by email. We have online forms to gather all the necessary information.  We'd like to meet you in advance and get to know you, but it's not necessary for a successful outcome.

Each year, Tom takes several photography education classes through Professional Photographers of America and through the state and local professional photographers' associations. He also completes continuing education classes online. These classes and his involvement in professional organizations keeps him current on the latest trends, techniques, and equipment.

We have several packages for weddings, family portraits, and senior portraits. We can also customize wedding packages to fit your budget and preferences, since one size rarely fits all. Some weddings are just the couple and officiant with no guests or reception and only need 30 minutes to an hour of photography. Some weddings are quite large, include engagement portraits, require 6-8 hours of photography, and include hundreds of proofs, an album, and several enlargement prints. Most weddings are somewhere in between those 2 examples. We're flexible.

Tom started photography as a hobby in the early 1980's. He began helping a professional photographer in a studio. This turned in to part-time paid work, and finally, became his sole profession. He opened his own studio in the mid-1980's, quit his previous profession. After to moving to Destin, FL, in the mid-1990's, he found that he no longer needed a studio, since most photography clients were from other states and wanted portraits and weddings on the beach or other outdoor areas. He loved the freedom, variety, and relaxation that offered his clients, so that is why he does not offer studio photography any more.

During our 20 years in Destin, we worked with people from all over the country and the world, with a variety of disabilities, with pets, and all age groups. We have no biases regarding race, religion, age, or sexual orientation. We love everyone equally and enjoy each person's uniqueness. We're very laid back and flexible.

We shot a beautiful, large wedding in Eden State Gardens in South Walton County, Florida. The location is breath-taking, and Cindy, our officiant, performed the ceremony under the "Wedding Tree," a huge live oak tree, covered in Spanish moss. We have done several weddings there, but this one was particularly beautiful. The weather was great, the couple and their families were especially nice, and because they were from south Louisiana, the food and music at the reception were exceptional. Everyone had fun and the photos reflect that.

First, look at the photographer's online portfolio to see if his or her style suits you. Compare different photographers' work. Are the images sharp? Is the lighting good? Look at the poses. Does everyone look comfortable and relaxed? Are there poles, trees, or other objects "growing" out of their heads? Are the shadows streaking across their faces or clothing? Look for details like that. Just because some says he's a photographer and has a fancy website, don't assume he's been doing it for more than a month or two. Many people get a nice camera for Christmas, then think they can take professional images. First, one needs to learn how to pose, use lighting, watch for unwanted background objects, and be able to get along with other people. There are many other factors which go into good photography. You should be able to spot the difference in the online photo examples.

Next, check to see if the photographer is a member of a professional photography organization. These groups have professional standards that must be met in order to be a member.

Finally, when you contact the photographers that interest you, ask questions about their experience. Ask if they have enough equipment, such as backup cameras, in case their camera stops working? Ask whatever questions you have.

If you're getting married, where will the wedding be, and what type of wedding will it be: indoors or outdoors; large or small, formal or casual, etc. Do you want engagement portraits, photos taken before the wedding, lots of candid shots or just posed, photos at the reception, etc? The more information you can supply up front, the better. That way the photographer can give you a more accurate quote.

If you want family or senior portraits, how many people will be in the group? Do you want more than one location? Does your senior want to wear more than one outfit or include props, such as hobby or sports equipment? What type of setting do you want: greenery in a park, architectural background, a lake, a mountain top, etc? Will there much travel involved, if you want more than one location?

The better the information, the more the accurate the quote. An informed photographer is a prepared photographer.

When talking to a wedding officiant, ask about his or her experience and verify that he/she is authorized to perform weddings in your area. Ask about any biases that might apply to you.  Some officiants' religious or social beliefs prevent them from working with divorced people, religions other than their own, interracial couples, or same sex couples. Do they perform both religious and secular weddings? Ask if you can alter the wording of the ceremony or if you have to use their exact wording. You want an officiant that is a good fit for you and our fiance'. This is the person who is going to unite you for life.

Have your list of questions in front of you when you call a wedding vendor. Make note of each photographer's or officiant's name, email address, and phone number, then note the answers to your questions under that. That way, you can compare them later, and you'll know the names and contact information of your favorites.
