Almost everyone today takes pictures, but a ‘Photographer’ is more than just a person who points a digital device and pushes a button or taps a screen, or someone who just happens to have a fancy DSLR and a bunch of lenses. A ‘Photographer’ is someone who can look at a subject and has the ability to frame and compose an image in a visually interesting way, and has the technical expertise to correctly expose and record that subject or scene in an aesthetically pleasing and memorable way... and that’s what I strive to do with every image I take.
I have always been fascinated with the mechanics of how cameras worked, the process by which light is captured on a piece of celluloid and the aesthetics of composing that light into a visually interesting image.
In college, I majored in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in English (Film) and my first photography honor came in 1980 when I was selected for 1st Place in the Kodak International Newspaper Snapshot Awards contest (KINSA).
As a member of several photographic societies and photography associations, including the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and the Professional Photographer’s Association (PPA), I’ve had the opportunity speak on a variety of photographic topics including, low level lighting and illumination techniques in landscape imaging, CIE Chromaticity and digital post-processing image enhancement techniques. In addition to authoring several articles on these topics as well, a number of my images have appeared local, regional and national travel and lifestyle magazines.
But getting back to the ‘why’ I like taking pictures: For me, I like it because it’s a fascinating and intricately challenging combination of mathematics, optics, physics, chemistry (film), and computer programming that when merged effectively, can create an visually beautiful and aesthetically interesting rendition of a visual perception of a precise moment in time . . . but most of all, it’s just plain fun.
