About

I have an ability to draw out subjects such that the true nature of their personalities are clearly seen. Everyone has his/her own story to tell, and I very much enjoy connecting with subjects and meeting them where they are in life.

I have been a professional photographer for most of my adult life, working primarily in print journalism (covering news, sports, business, lifestyles, entertainment, food and personalities in the news). Rather than slick studio productions, my work leans more in a documentary direction. If all goes well, I provide a window into a subject that most might not initially see.

Since leaving the journalism profession, I have been working for a number of editorial, corporate and commercial clients in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

Frequently asked questions

Hopefully, an initial phone call and/or e-mail will quickly determine if I am the right photographer and if the services I can provide is a good fit for the client.

Once this is established, then I work together with the client so that we are on the same page before a single photo is taken.

The success of any photo session hinges on the knowledge of both photographer and client, as well as the relationship established between photographer and client.

Photography has been my sole profession for the entirety of my adult career. When one is employed in the journalism field, one becomes an expert in photographing many areas of the human condition.

No.

Pricing is determined based on the parameters of the request provided by the client. Professional photography is not a cookie-cutter enterprise. Each opportunity is unique, and my pricing acknowledges the nature, time and effort to achieve the results that the client and I can be and are satisfied with.

I started in daily journalism, and found that I best served readers of our publications with visual journalism.

I have photographed everyone, from presidents and CEOs to sports figures, government officials, and "regular" folks of all stripes and professions.

I rarely refer to clients as "customers." A "customer" is someone who shops for a product at a store. My clients are subjects who have stories to tell, whether the photograph is a protrait, an activity, or a story that illuminates who they are and the venture they are involved with.

I was asked to join a group of inner-city kids who had never visited a working farm. The client is a foundation that provides growth experiences for at-risk youth among others, people whose view of the world is expanded through the wok of the foundation.

In this instance, the kids were enamored with every aspect of the farm (with the possible exception of a few of the odors). The kids were bright and inquisitive, and it was my privilege to capture their experience.

Photography is a very creative activity and service, and no two photographers are the same; therefore no two fee structures are the same.

The proposed fee for a shoot is certainly important, but there needs to be a clear understanding regarding the visual result a client is hoping for. Good communication and a good working relationship between photographer and client will always result in and agreed-upon fee and excellent photography for the client.

Does the client want photos that are merely a "record" of the person or event, or does the client want work that rises above the pack and reveals aspects of a person and/or event that truly communicates and achieves the goals set out by the client?

A number of potential clients might offer a very low fee, and as with any service, you get what you pay for.

With my photography, you are getting excellent results, technically and emotionally, every time out. Delivery of my images to a client is very timely, usually within a week of a shoot.
