One of the things that makes us stand out is our approach to clients and to the art of creating portraits. We prefer a lifestyle photography approach which includes photo moments of family members truly interacting with each other. For example, a moment when a little girl hugs her mom or little brother or family portraits with one child "acting out" making faces because they just can't sit still one more second. I love photos that show the personalities of each of my subjects. These, to me, are more special than just another photo of family members dressed alike smiling at the camera. People come back to us year after year for family portraits because of the way I work with families. I try to create a fun experience for everyone and avoid moments that make it feel like a chore. I will never raise an authoratative voice to a child, and ask that my clients not do this either. Instead, let me take the wheel and use my secret photographer tactics to get the kids' attention and create photos of true moments.
In addition, Oh Snap! Photography is most known for our award-winning wedding photography. My boudoir studio is in the art warehouse district in East Lawrence and often clients come to me for bridal boudoir in addition to their wedding photography, engagement portraits, and photobooths. We are pleased to have won 1st and 3rd place in the Best of Lawrence Awards for the last 4 years and to have won The Best of The Knot awards for wedding photography in Kansas City also for the last 4 years. In addition, in 2017 we were pleased to be inducted into The Knot Hall of Fame for wedding photography.
Like with our portraits, our wedding photo style is centered on capturing raw and true emotions in our candid coverage, while also offering enough posing suggestions for the couple's portraits to help you not feel awkward in front of the camera. Before the wedding, I work with each client to get an understanding of your aesthetic so that I can pick poses and backdrops that fit the style of your wedding and that makes sense with your personalities. One wedding can be super formal with all matching bridesmaids dresses and men's suits and I will photograph that wedding on the stairs of the Capitol building or in front of the columns of the Nelson Atkins, while another wedding could be styled much more informally with groomsmen in blue jeans and boots and plaid shirts and bridesmaids in mismatched cute dresses with boots and we'll stick to the barn venue and Kansas fields as our backdrop. I love creating different kinds of images from week to week, so no idea or aesthetic is unappealing to me--I'm all about channeling your vision board and creating images that will fit your personalities.

I enjoy meeting clients and getting to know them and creating photos that speak to their style. I am always excited to photograph in new locations or to take clients to some of my favorite photo spots all over Kansas City, Lawrence, and Topeka. My favorite part of the job is the people and working to create a fun experience for everyone involved. In the last 8 years in business, I've had more than one child tell me that they weren't excited about taking family photos but that I made it fun for them. This is the highest of all compliments and something I treasure and wish to create more feelings of in the future.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Portrait clients will contact me through email to book a session. For Senior Portrait clients and wedding clients I also offer a free consultation for us to discuss your project and have an opportunity to meet before we schedule any shoots. For wedding clients we typically meet for a first consultation to discuss pricing and put down a deposit for your date. Then an engagement session is scheduled and photographed. Finally, we do a final consultation to discuss the timeline and shot list for your special day.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I took photography courses at Pittsburgh Filmmakers in Pittsburgh, PA. For four years I worked in photo labs printing color and black and white film.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your services? If so, please share the details here.
All of my pricing is published on the investment page of my website. Portrait packages start at $200 and wedding packages start at $1800. We offer wedding photo booths for $600. All packages include images on USB drive with full printing rights.
How did you get started in this business?
I started photographing weddings for friends. I was that friend with a good camera before I became a professional photographer and bought all of the professional gear required for wedding photography.
What types of customers have you worked with?
We are especially proud to work with immigrants, people of color, and LGBTQIA families and couples. Oh Snap! is a business that celebrates diversity and is happy to document nontraditional families and different cultures and subcultures. For Senior Portraits we also love working with LGBTQIA students and work with students with various gender presentations and identities.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
Unless forced to financially, when it comes to wedding photography, do not hire a random friend with a good camera. I was once that friend, and I shot weddings with one camera and a pop-up flash. Sure, I captured great moments, but without the flair and knowledge and equipment I have now. Unless they are a professional photographer, it is doubtful that they will have invested the thousands of dollars in equipment that professional photography requires. If your planned photographer is not using off camera flash, then you are not hiring the right person to deal with the low light constraints of wedding receptions. If your planned photographer does have a back-up camera on their person, they are not ready for wedding photo responsibilities. Wedding photography is an investment worth hiring a professional for. We offer payment plans to help clients pay off their packages in smaller increments.
