Catherine Davis is an award winning PPA certified professional photographer with more than 20 years of experience specializing in family and senior portraits, professional head shots and corporate editorial projects.
A professional photographer for more than 20 years, I specialize in location lighting with an editorial twist and work with families and businesses to create images that tell their story.
For personal photography, what has kept me passionate for family portraits all of these years is the ability to create images that families treasure. Our lives run at such a hectic pace that it is important to hit the pause button to savor the moment. I realize that getting your family together, cleaned up and dressed for photos can be stressful, so the first part of every session for me is to set the mood-- we might start lively and playful or relaxed and serene. The end goal is the same- to capture a combination of posed portraits and candids with those moments of connection, contemplation or emotion. Authenticity. The photography doesn't end on session day. After I edit the session, we review the proofs together, in person or online meeting, using specialty software to pick favorites and make a plan so that you can be confident and excited about your order.
In commercial photography, the satisfaction of helping companies visually communicate to their clients and making the experience of the dreaded headshot a positive one brought me back to commercial work two years ago. Companies need photographs for many reasons. Sometimes, the turnaround is just as important as creativity. Other times it is the ability to work in a challenging location. Universally, companies want a photographer who understands the scope of the project and can deliver the images on budget and on time.

How did you get started in this business?
During college, I entered photography contests in the summer, and did pretty well. My images caught the attention of a local business man which turned into my first job- as a professional photographer- after graduating college.
I started out as an independent contractor and never looked back.

Families, Corporations, Small Business, Entrepreneurs
What advice would you give a customers looking to hire a vendor in your area of expertise?
Photographers want to give you the best possible service and most accurate estimate and we need specifics to do that. Be prepared to talk about your photography needs and wants.
What questions should customers think through before talking to vendors about their needs?
Is your event something that cannot be scheduled for a reshoot if the photography isn't successful the first time?
If the answer is yes, either because it is an event or it is almost impossible to get your family together, consider the experience of the photographer. Do they have a 2nd camera body for example, in case there is an issue. What about back up memory cards? Do they have the knowledge, equipment and experience to work in any kind of location?
If the answer is no, then it could be a great time to try a up and coming photographer. They will be less expensive and you may get the images you wanted.
