I'm a filmmaker, writer/director/producer, who moonlights as a videographer for a variety of clients including non-profits, event planners, weddings and commercial clients.
In 2011 I quit my job to work in film and video full time. Since then I've founded Rustbelt Productions which is releasing a feature film later this year. Prior to Rustbelt I founded SF Quality Video specializing in promotional videos and video services to non-profit and corporate clients (www.sfqualityvide.com). Before this I worked for 10 years as a documentary filmmaker and have shot and recorded hundreds of interviews.
I am well versed in the intricacies of a successful shoot. Including: Creative and technical camera work, lighting, optimal sound recording, conducting interviews and all the elements of pre-production including budget, planning and creative writing.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Typically I will offer clients a free consultation over the phone or by skype, sometimes in person, but always free. After discussing the needs of the clients I will return with a quote and a clear agenda for success. Upon agreeing to a rate I maintain great communication throughout the process to make sure the product meets the expectations of the client.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Bachelors in Film and Social Sciences from Ohio University.
15 years of professional experience directing, shooting and editing documentaries, client videos and a narrative feature film.
Full time video production since 2011.

My services vary so I don't have a standard system per se, however I am very reasonable and give fair and affordable quotes to all my clients.

Passion for filmmaking lead me to work full time in film and video production.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Last Summer I shot a variety of events for Orange Photography in San Francisco during several conventions that were happening. My favorite was a circus themed party with live performers. This was an event where my technical abilities worked hand in hand with my creative eye. The footage came out great and the client was very happy with the results. I shot the whole thing with just a tripod and handheld camera, but I have added new stabilization gear to my package since then as I'm always looking to up my game.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a pro in your area of expertise?
My advice is to take advantage of the oportunity to discuss the project in depth with a professional in advance of hiring someone. Everyone's needs are different and I would be wary of hiring someone or a company that takes a cookie-cutter approach to your specific needs.
What questions should customers think through before talking to pros about their needs?
Think about your budget. That's most important. Prepare yourself to consider pre-production, shooting and editing if editing services are required. Shooting rates are pretty straight-forward, but I find clients are sometimes surprised by the amount of work that goes into editing. It's an art form that if done right looks like it was seamless, but in fact a lot of time and effort can go into post-production.
